The escalator hummed softly beneath their feet as Jake adjusted his tie, lost in thought. A woman brushed against him, her touch deliberate.
"Thanks for last night," she murmured playfully, her lips curling into a smirk.
Jake stiffened. "Excuse me?"
Betty, his wife, froze beside him. "What did she just say?"
The woman chuckled and disappeared into the crowd before he could respond.
"Jake!" Betty's voice was sharp. "Who was that?"
"I—I don’t know," he stammered. "I’ve never seen her before in my life."
Betty’s eyes narrowed. "Then why did she thank you for last night?"
"It’s some kind of prank! I swear! Betty, come on—"
She wasn’t listening. Her gaze locked onto something on his shirt—a small flash drive stuck with a sticker that read, "Watch."
Jake ran a hand through his hair. "What is that?"
But Betty was already plugging it into her phone. The screen lit up with images—Jake and the same woman from the escalator, laughing, drinking, in an intimate embrace. Her breath caught.
"Lies," she whispered. "You lied to me."
Jake’s face paled. "Betty, I swear—this isn’t real! These are edited!"
She shoved the phone into his chest and turned on her heel, storming off.
Two Days Later
Gabby lounged in her office, a smug smile playing on her lips as she tapped her nails against her desk. The phone buzzed.
"It’s done," a voice on the other end said.
"She believed the photos?"
"Completely. They’re getting a divorce."
Gabby exhaled in satisfaction. "Perfect. It’s about time Jake sees who really cares for him."
A knock at her office door startled her. She quickly composed herself. "Come in."
Jake stepped inside, looking exhausted. "Gabby, I need your help."
She straightened. "Of course, anything."
"Betty’s leaving me. I... I fell for someone else."
Gabby’s heart raced. "Who?"
Jake smiled sadly. "A woman I met on the escalator. She’s... perfect."
Her stomach twisted. "Wait, what?"
"She gave me her number." He pulled out a slip of paper. "I think I should call her."
Gabby’s hands clenched into fists. "You—" she stammered. "You were supposed to fall for me!"
The office door swung open. Betty stood in the doorway, arms crossed, a victorious glint in her eye.
"I knew it," she said. "I knew you set him up."
Jake frowned. "What’s going on?"
Betty tossed the flash drive onto Gabby’s desk. "Your ‘proof’? It was Photoshopped. And your ‘secretary’ here orchestrated the whole thing."
Jake’s face darkened. "Gabby... tell me this isn’t true."
Gabby stammered. "I—Jake, I love you! She doesn’t deserve you!"
"You tried to ruin my life," he said coldly. "You’re fired. And I’ll make sure you never work again."
Gabby gasped. "Jake, please—"
But he was already walking away, Betty beside him. As they stepped into the elevator, Betty turned to him. "You still have a lot to prove to me."
Jake met her gaze, determination burning in his eyes. "I will."
