Anna reached down to pick up her fork, but as she tilted her head, her eyes widened in shock. There, under the table, curled up like a misplaced package, was a man.
"Simon... there’s someone under our table." Her voice was barely above a whisper.
Simon, utterly unfazed, popped a fry into his mouth. "Oh, that’s just Kevin. He helps me with things."
Anna straightened, confusion evident in her furrowed brows. "Helps you with what?"
Simon sighed, as if she had just asked why the sky was blue. "Everything. He books our dates, picks the restaurants, buys your gifts, even texts you."
A cold shiver ran down Anna’s spine. "He… texts me?" She tried to keep her voice calm, but the eerie realization clawed at her stomach.
Simon nodded. "Yeah, I’m not great with words, so Kevin handles all our digital communication."
Anna’s mind raced through every text, every sweet message, every romantic note. "Wait… even the one where you said you couldn’t wait to kiss me?"
"Yep."
Her stomach turned. "The picture I sent in my swimsuit?"
"Uh-huh. Kevin said you looked stunning."
Anna’s breath hitched. "Simon, tell me Kevin wasn’t involved in our actual dates."
Simon hesitated. "Define ‘involved.’"
"Oh my God! You mean—"
Simon sighed, rubbing his temples. "Look, I asked you to close your eyes when we kissed for a reason. Kevin has way more experience."
Anna shot up from her chair, knocking over her drink. "You’re insane! This—this is insane! You mean to tell me that every moment I thought I was sharing with you was actually with… him?"
Simon rolled his eyes. "Anna, you’re being dramatic. Kevin’s an expert in relationships. He made sure everything was perfect for you."
She turned to Kevin, who was now awkwardly emerging from under the table, straightening his tie. "Do you even speak, Kevin?"
Kevin gave a small, apologetic shrug. "I mostly type."
Anna grabbed her purse. "I’m done. You’re a lunatic, Simon. And you," she pointed at Kevin, "are enabling this madness!"
Simon groaned. "See, Kevin? I told you she’d overreact. This is why I needed you in the first place. She’s just too emotional."
Anna stormed out, her heart pounding with rage. As she stepped into the cool night air, she muttered, "Unbelievable."
Behind her, she heard Simon call out, "Kevin, you know what to do."
She didn’t stick around to find out what that meant.
