"Oh, okay then," Sydney replied, dismissing the odd encounter.
"Bye," the woman said, leaving abruptly.
"Who was that?" Sydney asked Ben, her date.
"Just a weird woman," Ben shrugged.
"Oh."
"Well, damn it! Shh! I think someone's watching us. Don't look." Ben's voice dropped to a whisper. "Did the weird woman look like this?" He showed Sydney a picture on his phone.
"Yeah! Damn, that's my wife!" Ben exclaimed. "Just play along."
"Sis! You finally came from overseas! We haven't been in this same country since we were kids!" Ben declared, throwing his arm around Sydney.
"Right," Sydney managed, playing her part.
"Yeah, brother, I'm so glad to see you again. It's been a long time."
"Mhm," Ben hummed, relieved. "Finally, I think she bought it."
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. "Honey, what are you doing here?" Ben asked, opening the door to his wife, Laura.
"Forgive me, jealousy drove me completely crazy! I sent that car to spy on you. I'm sorry." Laura gestured to a small toy car with a camera.
"So, you're his sister?" Laura asked Sydney.
"Oh yes, meet Sydney, uh, sis. This is my wife, Laura."
"Nice to meet you," Laura said, her eyes still suspicious. "Well, darling, why don't you grab a bottle of wine? We'll get to know each other better. Come on, we'll be fine."
"Are you alright then?" Sydney asked Ben quietly.
"So, so, I want to know everything. Um, are you the older or younger sister?" Laura pressed.
"Well, um, how old is he now?" Sydney stalled.
"You have a great sense of humor, but seriously, tell me about your childhood."
"Well, my childhood, uh..."
The story spiraled into a vortex of lies and deceit. Ben, caught in his own web, tried to maintain the facade, but the cracks were beginning to show. From a sudden visit from a woman claiming to be her mother, to a mysterious "Betty" mentioned in Ben’s sleep, Sydney realized she was tangled in a dangerous game.
"We need to visit her soon," Ben said.
"Mom? But she passed away 10 years ago. Then who I was talking to?" Sydney asked, confused.
"I asked you to play along," Ben hissed. "And as for you two, you'll end up with nothing except divorce papers soon."
The tension mounted with each passing moment. A hidden affair, a jealous wife, and a desperate attempt to maintain appearances created a volatile mix. The revelation of "Betty," a woman Ben was clearly involved with, shattered the illusion of a happy marriage.
"Honey, who's Betty?" Laura asked, her voice trembling.
"Betty? Imagine what it was like for me," Ben retorted, trying to deflect.
"Stay calm, baby. I'm sure it's just a misunderstanding," Sydney tried to soothe Laura.
But the truth was undeniable. Laura, fueled by suspicion, hired a private investigator, uncovering Ben's frequent visits to a coffee shop near his office, where a woman named Betty worked.
"Betty! Oh yeah, you never know how many Bettys are there in this city," Laura exclaimed, the pieces falling into place.
The confrontation was explosive. Laura, armed with evidence, stormed into the coffee shop, exposing Ben's affair. The scene was chaotic, a whirlwind of accusations and denials.
"Honey, what is going on here?" Ben asked, feigning innocence.
"I don't know what she's talking about," Betty added, looking flustered.
"Oh no, no, no, no, no, your girlfriend isn't cheating on you, is a very long story," Laura declared. "I'm sorry, I'd better go."
"Bravo, bravo! Okay, so tell me how it was. Did you like it or did I go overboard?" Ben asked, turning to Sydney.
"You played it to perfection," Sydney admitted.
"Yes, it's been a long time since I've seen my wife so confused. I wish the camera was in my hands instead of hers. And you, the picture of innocence. I'm so lucky that my wife thought you were my mistress, having regret now that you are not. Do you want to go out sometime?" Ben asked.
"You're not my type," Sydney replied, disgusted.
The story culminated in a dramatic showdown, where Laura finally confronted Ben and Betty, ending their deceitful relationship.
"Divorce papers, and after all you've told me about your long away anniversary, I'll take everything from you, and this is for you," Laura said, throwing a ring at Ben. "I hope I'll never see you again."
The tangled web of lies and betrayal unraveled, leaving behind a trail of broken hearts and shattered trust.
