The sun dipped below the horizon as Jane stepped off the bus, her military duffle slung over one shoulder. The familiar scent of jasmine from nearby gardens filled the air, mingling with the distant calls of street vendors. After three years deployed overseas, she was finally home.
Her heart pounded with anticipation as she approached the front door of her house. The porch light was on, casting a warm glow. She imagined the joyful reunion with her husband, Cruz.
She opened the door.
Laughter echoed from the dining room. Jane stepped inside, her boots clicking against the hardwood floor. The aroma of roasted chicken wafted through the air.
In the dining room, Cruz sat at the head of the table, surrounded by unfamiliar faces. Beside him, a woman—visibly pregnant—laughed at something he said.
Jane's voice trembled, "Cruz?"
Silence fell. Cruz's eyes widened in shock. The pregnant woman looked between them, confusion etched on her face.
"Jane?" Cruz stood slowly. "Is it really you?"
"Who is she?" Jane asked, her gaze fixed on the woman.
"I'm his wife," the woman replied, placing a protective hand on her belly.
Jane's world tilted. The room spun as she struggled to process the revelation.
"I thought you were dead," Cruz said, stepping toward her. "They told me your unit was ambushed. There were no survivors."
"I survived," Jane whispered. "I fought to come back to you."
Tears welled in Cruz's eyes. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a worn bracelet. "I kept this... to remember you."
Jane took a step back. "You moved on."
"I tried to forget, but I couldn't. I married Pen to fill the void, but it never worked. I still love you."
Pen's voice quivered, "Cruz, what's going on?"
Before anyone could respond, Pen gasped, clutching her abdomen. A sharp cry escaped her lips.
"She's in labor!" someone shouted.
Instinct took over. Jane rushed to Pen's side, guiding her to the couch. "Breathe, Pen. You're going to be okay."
Hours later, the cries of a newborn filled the room. Jane cradled the baby girl, tears streaming down her face.
"She's beautiful," Cruz whispered.
Jane nodded. "She deserves a happy family."
Pen looked at Jane, gratitude in her eyes. "Thank you."
Weeks passed. Jane moved into a small apartment nearby, trying to rebuild her life. One afternoon, she sat at a café, sipping a milkshake.
"Jane?" a familiar voice called.
She turned to see Cruz, holding the hand of a little girl.
"This is Lily," he said. "She wanted to meet you."
Lily smiled shyly. "Hi."
Jane's heart swelled. "Hi, Lily."
Cruz sat across from her. "Pen left. She said she couldn't compete with a ghost. But you're not a ghost. You're here."
Jane looked at him, memories flooding back. "We had dreams, Cruz. Two daughters, milkshakes every week."
He reached into his bag and pulled out a photo. It was of another little girl, identical to Lily.
"This is Rose," he said. "She's yours."
Jane's eyes widened. "How?"
"That night, before you left for deployment... you were pregnant. You didn't know. After the ambush, they found you unconscious. The doctors saved the baby."
Tears streamed down Jane's face as she clutched the photo.
"Our dreams came true," Cruz said softly. "We have two daughters."
Jane looked at Lily, then at the photo of Rose. Hope blossomed in her heart.
"Maybe," she whispered, "we can start anew."
