Lucy curled her fingers around her phone, her heart hammering. The sound of the front door creaking open sent ice through her veins.
"Dan, who's that?" she whispered.
Dan turned pale. "It's my wife."
"WIFE?!" she mouthed, shock slamming into her like a train.
"Shh, get under the bed! Don’t make a sound."
She barely had time to process the betrayal before scrambling under the bed, pressing a trembling hand to her mouth. The bedroom door burst open. A pair of worn black boots stopped inches from her hiding spot.
"Honey, what are you doing here?" Dan asked, voice tight.
A chilling laugh. "Surprised to see me? I missed you, baby."

Lucy’s pulse pounded. Now or never. She scanned the room, spotting a rusted nail protruding from the floor. She lunged, scraping her shaking fingers along its edge until—click. The cuff snapped open.
Footsteps thundered above. Dan screamed.
Lucy grabbed a rusted pipe, her breath ragged. As the woman raised the knife over Dan, Lucy swung with everything she had.
CRACK!
The woman collapsed.
Dan gasped. "Oh my God—"
Sirens blared. Red and blue lights painted the walls.
The last thing Lucy saw before passing out was Dan cradling her, whispering, "I'm so sorry."
